Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

I'm currently reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle at the recommendation of a friend, it's a memoir of Barbara Kingsolver's family starting the journey of eating organic, locally grown and raised food for one year.

It's really good, although it got off to a rocky start (just a wee bit preachy in the beginning) but it's really got me thinking about trying to be a little more conscientious about what we eat. Do you guys try to eat locally or is heading to your local groc much easier?

Hi Sarah I love reading and have to comment on this one. I try to eat locally (when it makes sense, pineapples should never be grown in Colorado that’s more harmful than shipping them). But to me that means more than buying things labeled ‘locally grown’, it means purchasing directly from local growers. We have a great farmers market here in Bloomington and I’m part of a coop grocery store. I also try to stay away from chains and buy from locally owned stores It’s often a few dollars more expensive but I really like the idea of my dollar staying in my community. Plus when the fam gets together we have this little voice of consciousness (named Maggie) who likes to remind us of the consequences of all our actions on the environment.

Thanks for your visit over at my place. It's great to get feedback on things that I post while I am building my house. I am bit worried that what I love now wont be so fabulous in a years time!... so lovely to hear from you. A-M xx

Great in theory but man cannot live on beef jerky alone - even if he does live in Wyoming.

My fiance and I definantly try to keep it local, which I feel is a very big trend in Austin, TX over the past few years. With our HUGE wholefoods and awesome local businesses there is no reason not to. Even our wedding venue (www.barrmansion.com) is certified organic, and all of there florals are from local growers. I hope this is a trend that is here to stay!
