Do it :: Pilates

As most of you know my job is teaching Pilates. I teach private clients, group classes and this year have also started doing teacher training. Even though most of they day my mind is either in Pilates mode or mom mode I don't really ever talk about it much on the blog but I thought that maybe I should change that. I get lots of questions about Pilates so I thought I would answer some of the common ones.

{Joseph Pilates working on the Trapeze Table}

What is Pilates?
The long and short of it is that it is a form of exercise developed by a man named Joseph Pilates. He was a genius and pretty hardcore. He developed series of exercises on lots of different equipment and had several apprentices throughout his life. These apprentices are now called the Pilates Elders and it's through these Elders that most current Pilates teachers have done their apprenticeships, learning in their style. All teachers have a lineage which is distinct because of when and how Joe worked with the Elders.  Pretty cool if you ask me.

How is Pilates different that Yoga?
Well now this is a tricky one...all you yoga lovers please don't throw tomatoes my way at my answer. Both are mind body exercise but they are quite different. In my opinion I think that Pilates is different because we're not focusing on an intention, we are focusing on the work. Many of the exercises have several parts or components that make it possible to focus inward while completing the work in the most efficient, precise way. Focusing on the work leaves your mind clear because if the exercises are done correctly you've left your cares at the door, no meditation needed. If you're like me and yoga makes you want to run away then try Pilates you might like it.

The machines look intimidating, I'm scared.
Nothing to be scared of because the machines are ahhh-some. Mr. Genius Joe Pilates developed those machines for those that couldn't do the Mat exercises, so they can sort of help you along. They can also make it a little more challenging but not to worry they're lots of fun. Every time I work with a new to Pilates client I always make sure they get on a machine because I know they're dying to try. The teachers are there to help you, make modifications as necessary and teach you the ins and outs of the equipment. We want you to leave feeling better than when you came in.

I'll be honest these are tiny, snippets of an answer but hopefully should give you a little insight into the mystique of Pilates. Really it's not all that mysterious, great workouts that leave you feeling energized as opposed to exhausted. Shoot me some questions if you have them via email and when I get enough I'll answer them here on the blog.

Hey there!

Really it's me, I'm here! Sorry about the unintentional blog break. Have I told how I've been busy working? All of the sudden (yay me!) I've gotten lots of pilates clients and still have to do the kid thing drive/cook/laundry/etc which of course puts a huge cramp in my blog's style. Not to mention the weather here has been too fabulous to stay away from. Here in AZ we have to get it while the getting is good. When it gets too hot no one is happy. It's like a hot, desert ghost town. Little is playing soccer, Big is playing baseball, the Mr. is still recovering from his knee surgery and I'm busy working people out. Thankfully it's been busy in a good way. Since it's been awhile here are a few things that totally have me excited lately.

Raw Revolution Chocolate Coconut bars, they're so good! I'm not really a big bar eater, but when I'm teaching with no break this is an easy thing to snack on in between clients. Latest obsession, seriously.

Thinking about summer cocktails. I love hanging out outside with friends so check out the Drink Me board that I share with The Invitation Lady on Pinterest. Lots of good stuff for spring and summer. Elderflower Champagne Cocktail? Yes please.

Italy. We're headed there this summer. I haven't been there yet so I'm feeling a little anxious that I don't know what to expect with the kids in tow. This adds a whole new element of freak out to international travel. So any sage advice on travelling with school age kids would be so appreciated.

Do it :: Work Out

Summer has not been kind to me my friends. I've spent little to no time at the gym these past two months. It has started to catch up with me in a big way so I've got to turn it around now that they're in school. I actually love working out but the gym I belong to has no childcare in the afternoons and the kids activities were usually in the morning during the summer so you know what that meant; me hanging out getting flabby, tired, etc., etc.

{via pinterest}

Just a few reasons to get you motivated:
1. Working out makes your skin pretty! Your skin is your largest organ, working out brings blood flow and oxygen to the skin and gets rid of all those icky toxins that get stuck in there.
2. After working out there is much less to feel guilty about if you have a treat or a glass of wine.
3. Buying workout clothing is fun. (Especially if it's from Lululemon!)
4. Working out makes you sleep better at night and we ladies need our beauty sleep.
5. If you're stressy like me, it works wonders.
6. The obvs, it's just good for you!

So who's with me? Anyone else getting back into the groove after a summer layover?

Get it :: Swissmar Peelers

This time of year I often hear people bemoaning the fact that they fell off of the good eating wagon. Vacays are coming up, trips that involve swimsuits and beaches. Aaahh! Well here is a little tip that might help with that and it's super easy. Get these Swissmar Peelers, I'm loving the julienne peeler. Perfect for those chopped veggie salads that are so fun to eat but such a pain to make, without having to get out the food processor or mandolin.

This will make it much easier, promise. Just doing my part to help with the vacay plans. Don't forget the salad recipes here's a few oldies but goodies from Mark Bittman.

Wear it :: Movement

Movement. Do you ever think about it? I think about it a lot which you probably wouldn't really know reading this blog. I spend a lot of time poring over pretty images and things I think are cool but I never really share how cool I think movement is. We spend most of our time in some kind of movement yet we never really think about it and what powers it. This weekend I spent lots time thinking about it and how to articulate it to others. I'm now training teachers in the Pilates method. Wow. Working with clients is one thing but training teachers is such a big responsibility, I'm honored and I'll be honest a little bit scared. But right now I'm feeling excited!  So in honor of my excitement I won't bore you with details on movement but maybe what you'd wear to move, at least for Pilates.

The Poppy Farmhouse

Last weekend at a meeting I heard about Cascina Papaveri (The Poppy Farmhouse for those of us unfamiliar with the Italian language).  Sounds like my kind of place, their tagline reads Pilates and Cookery vacations in Piedmont, Italy.  Umm, yes please, why am I only hearing of this now?

Dear Cascina Papaiveri if you need an instructor for a week or two, I'm in.

On another note if you're a Pilates instructor, Balanced Body's Pilates on Tour will be in Rome this year in December.  Nothing like a trip to Italy that can be counted as continuing education.

Sun, bowling and bicycles

We are celebrating because it's been super nice lately! Yesterday when I was picking up the kids the weather was beautiful and then I got in my car and laughed when I looked at my outside temp and it read 90. I guess it's all relative huh? I shouldn't complain because I always remind myself that you don't have to shovel sunshine. Crossing fingers that the sizzling days are almost over. Things are good around here we've been keeping busy with soccer camp, summer preschool and today we bowled. I forget how fun it is to bowl. Too bad it was so early (a kid event) because there's always something about those bowling alleys that cry for a frosty cold beer. Come on, I can't be the only one who thinks bowling and beer go hand in hand.
{not exactly Spinning but it's Sartorialist which beats Spinning any day}

Have I told you all about my new favorite way to work out? Spinning, I love it! It's super hard and I'm drenched afterwards but I feel like I got a really good workout in. I attribute much of this new found love to a super cool teacher who plays great music (loud which is a must). But if you haven't tried I suggest you give it a whirl. So what's new with you?

April 12, 2010

Perfect weekend.

I had the best week with my kids at the beach and I was thoroughly inspired this weekend at the Pilates on Tour conference. I was flattered to be asked by my mentor to assist her at her presentations. Sometimes you just need a little recharge you know?

With that recharge came a tired brain and body. Need some coffee and a minute to relax.

Sports anyone?

I have attempted learning to golf more than once and as soon as it hits the triple digits around here I duck and cover. Get this girl to the clubhouse stat! But seriously how cute are these shoes? Makes me want to give it a whirl just one more time.

Is it wrong to want to golf just because they have good accessories?

What's in a name?

OK I need some help and I thought who better to come to than you! As many of you know I'm a Pilates instructor and I teach at a local studio [which I LOVE] but every now and again I get a request to teach privates with friends or family. So this year I've decided to make that happen by setting myself up with some business cards if someone is interested. So I need to come up with a name for my teeny little venture.

I'm not looking to be the next Mari Windsor or anything; but if a neighbor asks and doesn't want to make the drive to the studio I teach at I would love to be able to do it myself at their home. So please help, I'm taking any and all suggestions! You can comment or email me at sarahsfabday[at]gmail[dot]com.

P.P.S

OK Santa since we're already on the subject of fitness one more teeny thing, I've been lusting after these for awhile. I think they would fit perfectly in my stocking.

Wish List Vol. I

Dear Santa, I know this year it's probably not in the cards but you have to admit this would be perfect for me. Maybe next year? I promise to be extra good.

Love, Sarah

PS - Maybe you could squeeze in one of those new arcs to go with it?

What's your style?

For those of you that are thinking you might want to try Pilates but are a little hesitant to take the plunge check it out the post on the different styles by Heads Up On Your Body. It's very informative and might help you decide on what would be best for you.

Little lemon

I was browsing J. Crew and got all excited because I saw that they are carrying yoga clothes, then (yawn) nothing special. They do however have a cheerful yellow yoga bag that I love!
